Preparation for the Sacrament
Confirmation preparation is a commitment and our hope and expectation is that participants (and parents where needed ) attend and actively participate in all elements of the program, including active participation as a family in the weekly celebration of Mass.
Confirmation is the Sacrament in which you receive a deeper outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It completes what began in Baptism, strengthening the gifts needed to live out your whole life as a Catholic.
Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is a two year process that typically begins in September of 7th Grade and completes in May of 8th grade.
This is an exciting and important time in the process of growing in faith and our program features opportunities to experience all the aspects of parish life and ministry. We want young people to know what it is like to believe and belong to the parish community of St. Denis Church. Faith is put into action through liturgical, parish and community service opportunities. Our Catechists help the participants understand and experience prayer, Social Justice, Morality, central beliefs in our faith and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Also included in our program are 2 retreats. The first is in 7th grade when the students begin the program. The second retreat is in the 8th grade and they are accompanied by their Confirmation Sponsor closer to the Sacrament & at the beginning of their own walk in faith.
The Role of Parents in Preparation for the Sacraments
As a parent, you are an important contributor to your child’s experience in celebrating the Sacraments. By your own faith, you teach your child the beauty and value of Catholic belief and practice.
Children receive their Catholic identity first and foremost from their parents. Your example of participation in our Sunday Mass celebration, in the life of the parish community, and your own life of prayer and service is a strong foundation for your child’s preparation for the Sacraments.
We invite you to participate in the different activities we offer in the Religious Education Program as we prepare your child to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Parents of teens in 7th grade should receive notification of important dates and meetings in September at the beginning of the religious school year.
If you are a parent of a child in 7th grade and have not received this information, please contact the Religious Education Office. Teens must be enrolled in the parish Religious Education program and begin preparation for this Sacrament in the 7th grade.
